Last you heard from me I told you about Adin Mickle, a senior on the cross-country team -- the now 11th ranked team in the mid-atlantic region. After the Owls placed 5th in the Atlantic 10 championships this past weekend they moved up in the rankings, surpassing their 13th ranked spot from earlier this season, which was already a historical team high.
Mickle is not the Owls best runner, but at times he says he feels like he is the program...and why not? The program didn't start to take off until 2006, when Temple actually made an effort to carry a cross-country team after it was cut from the program in years past. The team wasn't great, but there was a team. In fact, most of the runners that first season hadn't trained over the summer and were sorely out of shape.
Insert head coach of the cross-country team, Matt Jelley. Jelley took the job the following year and the team has made large strides every year since. In his first year the team went from last in the A10 to 9th. They repeated a 9th place finish the following year, but blew the expectations out of the water this year finishing 5th.
Aside from Jelley, the most consistent part of this team, though, has been Mickle. Mickle even jokingly said, "I'm like the old man on the team." Mickle's career is over, at least in the A10, as he will graduate in the spring, but he was the first piece --the piece that an 11th place ranking won't show on paper
I sat down with Mickle to get his thoughts on the season and his career. The link below will take you to the interview.
